Advice for Beginning PhD Students
There are several tips for success as an entering doctoral students, with no more important than the others. Here’s a few to consider:
Understand the university’s doctoral process and expectations
View the doctoral journey as a marathon versus a sprint
Seek and develop a strong support network of family, friends, colleagues, and eventual academics
Review recently published dissertations from the university in your degree specialization to familiarize yourself with what you are attempting to achieve
Begin to learn how to write as a scholar and how to apply proper formatting, such as APA
Begin to consider a possible dissertation topic. I’ve found that students do much better when they can apply their dissertation topic and associated research throughout their core courses
Develop the dissertation topic paper, or equivalent, such that once assigned a dissertation Chair/Advisor/Supervisor you can “hit the ground running” to save time and money through timely degree completion
Determine ahead of time that critical review and feedback of work submitted is for your benefit and is not a reflection on you personally. Your ability to accept feedback and apply feedback for improved dissertation deliverables is essential for success
Seek help, as needed. No need to walk this journey alone. There are experts who are available and willing to help, including university resources provided
