47% on Turnitin is obviously high. What should I do?

Many students believe that the Turnitin percentage reflects, or is an indicator of plagiarism; however, it only reports similarity - which may or may not be plagiarized. Therefore, the steps to take are as follows:

  • Obtain the Turnitin Originality Report (showing highlighted areas of similarity and source for each)

  • Review the Turnitin Originality Report and highlighted passages to ensure that each has been properly cited (avoiding plagiarism)

  • Rewrite each highlighted passage in your own “voice” via paraphrasing

  • Rerun Turnitin

Plagiarism is indeed something to avoid; however, many academic institutions do not accept high similarity - regardless of plagiarism. Therefore, best practice is to (a) write in your own words, and (b) ensure that all work is cited.
