How do I earn a doctorate degree?

A doctorate is the highest level of academic achievement and is earned by demonstrating the ability to conduct doctoral level research and writing, based on an approved research topic for the dissertation, thesis, or applied project (depending on university and degree). Typically, the flow of the dissertation is

  • Complete core courses in your academic discipline (business, IT, education, etc.) and doctoral research basics (qualitative, quantitative, statistics, academic writing, etc.),

  • Choose a topic for research (esp. problem, purpose, research questions, and high-level design),

  • Develop a proposal (what and how the topic will be researched) - typically, chapters 1–3 of the dissertation,

  • Obtain approval for data collection from the IRB (Institutional Review Board) for the protection of human subjects,

  • Conduct data collection and analysis, then

  • Write-up your findings, conclusions, and recommendations for the final manuscript,

  • Defend your research,

  • Publish your study, then

  • Graduate!

The above is obviously over-simplification, and will differ by institution, but provide a reasonable understanding of the process many doctoral candidates and students follow. In the above process, a Chair/Advisor/Supervisor is also assigned/approved, along with a dissertation committee - typically consisting of a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and potentially a Methodologist. The Chair/Advisor and Committee will be responsible for guiding and overseeing your work and progress, throughout.
