What does originality mean on Turnitin?
When a paper is submitted to Turnitin an Originality Report is created, which highlights passages found to be similar to other sources, along with an overall similarity percentage. It is this percentage that is used by faculty and students to assess the likelihood of plagiarism; however, it is possible that a paper with a high similarity score is not plagiarized if citations are properly used. Regardless, a high similarity is also deemed something to avoid for academic writing in lieu of improved originality - written in the author’s own “voice”. Therefore, regardless of the similarity percentage - high or low, it is important that all sources are properly cited to avoid plagiarism.
