What should someone do if they are given major corrections in a PhD thesis, which seem overwhelming?
The need to make corrections, including major corrections is part of the doctoral process, so to prepare, have this expectation up-front to minimize disappointment. Regardless, human nature is geared for disappointment when our work is less than perfect, so understand that is a natural response, then reset to overcome and succeed.
As a PhD dissertation/thesis coach I’ve worked with many clients who were in this same situation, in that, their latest paper was marked with changes and comments, throughout, and seemed overwhelming at the time. My approach to working with these clients is to
Understand the nature of the comments (topic, methodology, writing, APA)
Determine if any comments are roadblocks or simply speedbumps
Prioritize work to first address any roadblocks, then move on to the speedbumps
Break down and simplify the work by addressing each comment at a time, rather than looking at the number of comments
Eventually, students/clients see the light at the end of the tunnel and begin to realize the value of the comments received and that by addressing the comments, a much better product/paper will result. Remember, the best dissertation is a “done” dissertation!
