The number of factors (5) appears somewhat arbitrary; however, here are those factors that I believe are important when selecting and developing a research problem:

1. A real and tangible problem (not vague or a possible problem)

2. A problem that can be cited in recent, peer-reviewed, journal article(s)

3. A problem that aligns with the student’s degree specialization

4. A problem for which a gap in the literature exist to justify the need for further research

5. A problem that is viable, such that it would logically lead to a “done” dissertation
