Research design defines how the research will be conducted - qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method. Design encompasses elements such as population, sampling, instrumentation, data collection, and data analysis.

The steps in the research design process begin with development of the problem statement and research gap, followed by the purpose and research questions. Together, these determine the research method - qualitative, quantitative, or mixed. Within the chosen method, the research approach follows, such as case study for qualitative or correlational for quantitative.

The specific desgin options for each research method and approach are many, but can be generalized. For instance, qualitative typically requires interviews for open-ended data collection, while quantitative requires the use of surveys or secondary data sources, which also determine the instrumentation choices and sampling.
