What is a research title?
A research title, esp. doctoral (PhD) is a concise synopsis of the study, typically expressed within 1–2 lines (10–15 words). Topic title creation is very difficult, but when done well provides a great indicator of the study purpose to potential readers.
Elements of the research topic title may include:
The problem or phenomenon
The variables (quantitative)
The research method (qualitative and quantitative)
The population
To illustrate, the topic title for my own dissertation is “Assessing the Relationships Among Information Technology Flexibility, Strategic Alignment, and Information Technology Effectiveness”. Note that additional items to add to this title could include the method and design “: A Quantitative Correlational Study”, as well as the population “Within Corporate 1000 Organizations”, or similar.
