The "Ideal" PhD Candidate

Based on my roles as a doctoral professor, dissertation coach, and previously as a PhD student, here are some observations for an “ideal” PhD candidate:

What an “ideal” PhD student looks like:

  • Understands the pros and cons of pursuing a PhD

  • Motivated to learn and achieve as the PhD journey is more of a marathon than a sprint

  • Has a strong support network to weather the ups-and-downs that occur throughout the PhD journey

  • Has the financial resources to complete the doctorate without incurring more debt than can be repaid. While finances may not deter PhD completion, there is a price to pay (and burden) after graduation, which should be avoided, if possible. For this, consider the return on investment (ROI) of obtaining a PhD, versus the outcome and ability to pay.

  • Possesses a strong work ethic to complete assignments and deliverables on time

  • Is able to learn and/or apply scholarly-level writing, including grammar, APA (or similar) formatting, and use of associated technology, such as Microsoft Word. However, these skills can be acquired over time…

  • Possesses sufficient expertise and knowledge in research field, e.g., business, IT, education, etc. This criteria is important as the doctoral journey requires significant learning of research skills, writing, and of the dissertation process. Adding a lack of domain-specific knowledge and expertise only compounds the difficulty of obtaining a PhD

Once beginning the PhD, then several more factors apply in terms of PhD completion; however, the above appears to be a good representation, although partial list, of key qualifications for the “ideal” PhD candidate.
