Why does getting a PhD take so long?

The answer depends on one’s definition of “too long”. I completed my PhD in under 3 years; however, the average time is 5–6 years. As a dissertation professor, chair, and coach I find that those who require more time to complete their PhD then the minimum permitted is due to a number of reasons, including:

  • A lack of focus and direction for their dissertation topic and path to achieve a “done” dissertation

  • A lack of communication with the Chair/Advisor or Committee - allowing too much time to pass before taking action

  • Personal circumstances - whether health, work, finances, family, etc., that require either a slower pace or extended breaks

Often, the above impacts can be avoided, but not always. Therefore, if in an uncontrollable situation, then suggest giving yourself grace to take more time and/or return to your studies when more convenient. However, if controllable, then take action to move forward, whether contacting the Chair/Advisor directly, excalating issues to the Dean, working with a Coach, taking a second job, eating and exercising better for improved health, developing a support network of family, friends, colleagues, peers, etc., and more… Basically, taking ownership of your process and success.
