Based on this, there are multiple types of checking, including: (a) ensuring that each reference (source) is relevant to the research topic; (b) ensuring that each reference is properly cited within the context of the paper, where cited; and (c) ensuring that all references are cited within the paper, where used, and vice-versa.

For (a) and (b) there truly is no shortcut as each source needs to be read and reviewed for content, along with the expertise and understanding of its applicability and relevancy to the paper and topic.
