What are some good research questions for a thesis about remote working?

Research questions on remote working can be qualitative or quantitative - depending on the problem and gap being addressed. Possible research questions might include:

  • What factors do remote workers perceive as being important for their decision to work remotely? (qual)

  • Why do workers prefer to work remotely? (qual)

  • How does management of remote workers differ from on-site workers? (qual)

  • To what extent does a worker’s decision to work remotely differ, by gender? (quan)

  • To what extent does a worker’s decision to work remotely differ, by [fill in the nominal-type variable, e.g. rural vs urban, etc.)? (quan)

As the question asked for response does not indicate the problem being addressed, then possible correlational research questions cannot be suggested. For instance, if the problem is low quality of work or productivity by remote workers (as supported in the literature), then possible research questions might be:

  • Why is productivity/quality/etc. (pick one) lower among remote workers than on-site workers? (qual)

  • How can remote worker productivity/quality/etc. (pick one) be improved? (qual)

  • To what extent does worker productivity/quality/etc. (pick one) differ, based on location (remote vs on-site)? (quan)

In conclusion, research questions, alone are insufficient for thesis or dissertation research, but rather, must be driven by a viable and supportable problem and gap in the literature.
