What is ANOVA in research methodology?

Based on my experience, Analysis of Variance, or ANOVA, is an inferential statistical test to examine the extent that one variable (dependent/outcome) differs, based on another variable (independent/predictor). Typically, the independent/predictor variable is nominal-type data, e.g., gender, while the dependent/output variable is interval (although Likert-type ordinal data may be suitable). This type of quantitative approach is commonly known as causal comparative, versus correlational.

A typical research question and hypothesis requiring ANOVA testing (or t-test), might be:

RQ1. To what extent does salary differ, based on gender?

H1o. Salary does not differ, based on gender

H1a. Salary differs, based on gender

For the above, ANOVA could be used to reject, or not, the null hypothesis (H1o).

Finally, ANOVA and t-tests are very similar; however, ANOVA can test more than two groups, while t-test is limited to only two.
